Handcrafted Instruments by H.J. Lidgate

Time allowing I make violins, violas and cellos entirely by hand. I get a particular thrill when, having finished the work of turning blocks of wood into a violin, I hear it played for the first time. It is amazing that such sound can emerge from such an unlikely start.

My instruments are based on the patterns of Stradivari for my violins and cellos, but I have drawn my own plan for a 16 ¼ viola, based on the design of Brescian maker G.P. Maggini. Whilst the underlying designs depend on classical makers the detailed finish is my own work.

The backs, ribs and necks are maple whilst my fronts are spruce wood from Italy. This is a very springy wood of low density ideal for making resonant instruments.

As every instrument has its own voice and playing qualities, if you are searching for your ideal I can only invite you to try mine.

Prices by negotiation from £1500.
